The Places That Make a Home

A love letter to the places we call home, and to the people who have trusted us with theirs.

A home is never just the house. It’s the morning walk, the coffee shop where they know your order, the park you cut through, the neighbor you always end up talking to longer than you planned. It’s knowing which block looks best in October, and where to take out-of-town friends. It’s everything that happens around the front door.

We feel lucky to do this work here.

Alexandria makes you slow down and notice things, the old brick, the rows of Federal houses, trees that look like they’ve been there forever. Original floors, shutters a little crooked in the right way. A garden hidden behind a gate. A street you’ve walked a hundred times that still catches you off guard in the evening light.

And it’s not just Alexandria. Arlington’s neighborhoods, the streets of Northwest DC, the neighborhoods along the Potomac, every pocket of the DMV has its own rhythm and its own people who wouldn’t live anywhere else.

We know these places because we’ve spent our lives in them. Patrick grew up and still lives in Alexandria. Joan and Philip have lived and worked in almost every pocket of Northern Virginia for decades. Nicole grew up in Arlington and lives in Old Town now. Between the four of us, we’ve spent decades getting to know these neighborhoods, the homes within them, and the people who call them home.

That’s the part of the job that sticks with us, not the transactions, but the people. Clients who called us before they even knew what they were looking for. Families who let us into their homes and trusted us with one of the biggest decisions they’d make. First-time buyers who became friends. Longtime owners finally ready to let go of a house they loved.

Every house has a story. So does every move. That’s what we love about this work, we get to meet people at these strange little turning points, whether they’re buying their first place, making room for a growing family, or finally ready for something new. And somehow, we get a front-row seat to it.

So we wanted a place to share the stuff we’re already talking about all the time: the houses that stop us mid-scroll, the architectural details we can’t get enough of, the neighborhoods worth wandering, the local shops we send our friends and family to, what we’re seeing in the market, and the stories behind some of the homes we’ve had the privilege of selling.

It won’t always be about real estate. Sometimes it’ll be a home, a neighborhood, a beautiful detail, a local find, or simply something we think is worth sharing. From our desk to yours.

Whether you’re already a client, thinking about reaching out, or simply someone who appreciates an old house and a walkable street, we hope you’ll find something here that feels like you. Because after all this time, we still find something to love here, and we’re looking forward to sharing some of it with you.

Welcome to our corner of the DMV.

We’re so glad to have you.

Cheers,

The Shannon Group
